During the 1970s, when there was a so-called Jesus Revolution, one of the more popular musicals that appeared off-Broadway was “Godspell,” loosely based on the Gospel of Matthew. Some of the songs were traditional hymns set to contemporary music. The musical, which was composed by lyricist Stephen Schwartz with a book by John-Michael Tebelak, originally began as a class project by Carnegie Mellon University drama students, several of whom followed the production to New York, where it was very successful and went worldwide. There was also a film version and a Broadway revival in 2011.

GodspellThe most popular song from the show’s score was “Day by Day,” which became an international hit. The words in the refrain are attributed to a prayer by St. Richard of Chichester, a 13th-century English bishop:

“[Dear Lord] May I know Thee more clearly,
Love Thee more dearly,
Follow Thee more nearly.”

The song is a very moving prayer and a reminder of something all of us should do on our healing journey.
