Life Goes On
By Melanie Barnard
Should you see a flag flying on a pole outside your local hospital saying “The Gift of Life is Given Here Today”, pause to say a prayer of thanksgiving for one whose earthly life has just ended and his heavenly life begins with applause at the Pearly Gates for the gift of life in organ donation is being given.
The donor who, after many tests, has been declared clinically dead, is being wheeled into the operating room. It is a silent walk or one with a quiet hymn being played or prayer recited by a stream of family and grateful staff and clergy and chaplains who line the halls and walk in honor as this amazing and miraculous gift of organs are transferred from one human being to another whose life depends on this gift.
The organs are then gently and professionally transported immediately to one or more hospitals where other patients and their families have been waiting, sometimes for years, for this gift. The organs are expertly implanted into the recipient.
This is indeed the Gift of Life. If you or anyone you know might consider organ donation, discuss it with your family. Then have it added to your driver’s license by contacting the DMV where you live.
There is no greater gift than the Gift of Life.
