Portrait of Peter

This poem was written by grieving mother Tonia Brendel and sent to her family and friends on the first anniversary of her son Peter’s death.

Talk about Peter.
Peter left suddenly a year ago.
Did God not know the weight of this loss?
I have to trust that he did.
I know no reason.
Some cannot cry.
Some cannot stop.
But we must always talk about Peter.
He loved us so…
With his smile and laugh
Peter shared his culinary gift of love.
His humor was quick and sly.
He overcame so much and worked very hard.
He would never have let you know it.
Please talk about Peter.
Share your stories even though your heart may ache.
He was a loving soul to all animals.
If a ladybug, butterfly, cardinal or any other
of nature’s creatures gently crosses your path,
It well may be Peter saying, “Here I am
and it is okay to talk about me.
Remember my life and live yours well.’
Love,
Mom
