Grief can often change us in ways we least expect and in ways we never thought possible. In her blog Diane-Ward.com, she talks about her life, her grief and her poetry.

After her son Aaron was stillborn, she discovered that poetry could be a spiritual and peaceful experience for her. She says, “My poem, ‘Silent Joy,’ was written in minutes as I allowed my emotions to flow from my heart onto paper. Writing was therapeutic then and has been ever since.”

Hand Writing In Journal“I believe it’s never too late to make a difference,” she said. “I went back to school and graduated from college at the age of fifty. I’ve written devotions for my life group class at church and am involved in a writers’ critique group. I’ve been published in The Treasury of Christian Verse by Barbour and Company and still make handmade cards with poems tucked inside for my family and friends. I’m active on the planning committee at New Life Adoptions in Houston and co-facilitator for a support group for birth-grandmothers (women whose grandchildren have been placed with adoptive families). I’m currently in the process of writing a devotional book which I hope to get published in the near future. Stay tuned.”

In an article about her by Kim Hughes in 2004, Ward said: “It’s been a dream of mine since 1986. That was the year my husband, and I delivered a son that was stillborn. In order to go through that loss, I found the gift of poetry was hidden inside. I was able to write a poem to release a lot of feelings about that experience…”

That gift and passion for writing that developed from her grief has led Ward in a new direction. She is also working on a series of Christian children’s books.

“They will introduce children to the fruit of the Spirit as mentioned in Galatians: Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control,” she said.
