“O my God, how I pity those people who do not believe in eternal life”

Most of us have never been there … but many have. There are countless accounts about visits to Heaven from people who’ve had near-death experiences. They have existed since time immemorial and are written about frequently in modern times. There are even accounts from children, which have been popularized in films, such as “Heaven Is for Real: A Little Boy’s Astounding Story of His Trip to Heaven and Back,”
There is also a growing genre of literature with titles like “Imagine Heaven: Near-Death Experiences, God’s Promises and the Exhilarating Future that Awaits You,” “Heaven, an Unexpected Journey: One Man’s Experience with Heaven, Angels and the Afterlife,” and “A Divine Revelation of Heaven.”
Many saints were granted visions of Heaven and Hell, including St. Paul, who said — possibly of himself — “I know someone in Christ who, fourteen years ago (whether in the body or out of the body I do not know, God knows), was caught up to the Third Heaven. And I know that this person was caught up into Paradise and heard ineffable things, which no one may utter (2 Cor 12: 2-4).”
St. John the Evangelist’s vision was described in the Book of Revelation, and St. Faustina, wrote in her diary in 1936: “Today I was in Heaven, in spirit, and I saw its unconceivable beauties and the happiness that awaits us after death. I saw how all creatures give ceaseless praise and glory to God. I saw how great is happiness in God, which spreads to all creatures, making them happy; and then all the glory and praise, which springs from this happiness returns to its source; and they enter into the depths of God, contemplating the inner life of God, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, whom they will never comprehend or fathom. This source of happiness is unchanging in its essence, but it is always new, gushing forth happiness for all creatures.”
She concludes by writing, “O my God, how I pity those people who do not believe in eternal life” and she prayed that “a ray of mercy would envelop them too, and that God would clasp them to His fatherly bosom.”
