Whatever your vocation in life — professor, plumber, caregiver, homemaker, financier, religious, politician — God has a purpose for you, so look for God’s purpose first in all you do. And never mistake status, academic achievement, worldly acclaim and financial success for God’s purpose, which very often can be found in little things, not monumental things, in spiritual gifts, not worldly accomplishment.
Today is the Feast Day of St. Joseph the Worker, whose humble status in the eyes of his society and whose commitment to God’s purpose should be an example for us all.
Prayer to St. Joseph the Worker by St. Pope Pius X
“O glorious St. Joseph, model of all who labor,
obtain for me the grace to work in the spirit of penance
in expiation for my numberless sins;
preferring devotion to duty to my inclinations;
to work with joy and gratitude,
regarding it as an honor to develop and employ
by my work the gifts that I have received from God,
to work with order, peace, patience and moderation,
without ever recoiling before weariness and difficulties;
to work, especially with pure intention and detached from myself,
ever having death before my eyes
and the account that I must give for time lost,
for talents unused, for good omitted and for vain satisfaction in success,
which are so fatal to the work of God.”
