One of my friends whose family owns a chain of clothing stores and who is in a recovery program says that his favorite outfit isn’t a well-tailored Brioni suit or a handmade Italian blazer. It’s a tee shirt that simply says “Gratitude.” The attitude of gratitude is fundamental to his sobriety.

Man Smiling In ChurchThat’s a lesson for all of us. Never take a person’s kindness or generosity for granted. Say “thank you” to someone who holds the door. Say “thank you” to someone who compliments you. Say “thank you” when someone shows you a courtesy. Say “thank you” to God. Say “thank you” for the sake of saying “thank you,” and you’ll change the world. The person you thank will feel good, and you’ll make the world a better place.

People who don’t think they have anything to be thankful for aren’t looking hard enough. Unfortunately, people who have the most to be thankful for are often the ones least inclined to say “thank you” because they consider what they have as acquisitions rather than blessings.

Imagine living a life of ingratitude and then going face to face with Jesus for your life review and realizing too late all that he did for you and the countless blessings you received … and all the times you neglected to say, “Thank you, Lord.”
