While Sandy was driving to the grocery store on Saturday morning, her daughter Dana called and began talking about life in California, the wild fires, her daughter’s new school, the new business that she and her husband had started, selling vintage clothing … when suddenly Sandy interrupted their conversation and said, “I gotta go, I gotta go. I’ll call you right back.”
To which Dana responded, “Where are you going? You’re in the car?”
“An ambulance just raced by and I need to pray for the person.”
There was silence on the other end of the line, and Dana hung up and waited for the return call. Sandy meanwhile, watched the ambulance race by with its siren blaring and lights flashing. She immediately made the Sign of the Cross and said a Hail Mary for the person in distress. It was a spiritual 911 call. She did have to go. She did it again when her grandson was in the car and promptly encouraged him to start doing the same thing.
In fact she also does it whenever she sees a funeral procession going by and prays for the repose of the soul of the person who died. Praying for strangers, living and deceased, is a practice that will be well rewarded when we all meet again in the heavenly kingdom.
