In our grief, God reaches out to us, even if we’re angry, and blame him for all the pain in our lives. He isn’t deterred. He reaches out and he keeps on reaching out because he’s God, and as St. John said, “God is love.” Pure and infinite love like we’ll never encounter down here.

Hands Reaching to LightCynthia’s mother was one of nine children, only five of whom continued into a long life. Two boys died when they were still babies, even before her mother was born.

“She didn’t grow up in the church like many of us,” Cynthia recalled. “But somewhere along the way, the Lord reached out to her somehow. I heard all about a special Sunday School teacher who sort of took her under her wing when my mother was a preteen and who continued to send cards even as I was growing up.”

Her mother eventually joined the Lutheran Church when she was a newly married woman and mother-to-be.

“She had us baptized and brought us up actively in the church,” Cynthia said. “She had great faith. God carried her through! And I hope he carried her to Heaven!”

This should be an example for all of us. That a Sunday school teacher, who with simple kindness and compassion, opened the door for God to step in. Equally important, such small acts demonstrate what we can do for others who are wandering in darkness, doubt and pain.

St. John also said, “God is light, and in him there is no darkness at all.” Look for the light. It will show the way. Ask God to show you how you can be the instrument and how you can be the light for others.
