Memories of our loved ones who have passed come in all shapes and sizes. Some leave us consumed with longing for our time together, others resurrect occasions when we argued and disagreed, and still others ….
Susie still remembers the time her father George drove her to the vet in Stamford to pick up their dog. She got out and went inside, while her father sat in the car, listening to the radio and smoking a cigarette, which he wasn’t supposed to do, with the windows rolled up while the air conditioning was on. A few moments later she came out because she needed a credit card. As she approached the car, for some inexplicable reason, George backed up the car and drove onto Susie’s foot in her flip-flops.
“Daddy, you’re on my foot!” She yelled, but George was oblivious, enjoying his contraband cigarette and listening to country music.
“You’re on my foot!” She screamed and pounded on the car hood, and George came to life. He was shocked and put the car in reverse. “Geez that was close,” he said.
It was one of the many misadventures that her family recalls now, with laugher and love about the patriarch of their family who died seven years ago. His passing left a large whole in all their lives, most notably the thoughts of his misadventures that every so often they recalled and brought smiles to their faces.
Just remember, when you have the ability to laugh at the good times and the crazy times, that’s a sure sign that love never dies.
