— St. Paul to the Thessalonians
Because you have faith in God doesn’t mean you won’t feel pain over the loss of a loved one. Because you have faith doesn’t necessarily mean you will be stronger than other people. Because you have faith doesn’t mean you won’t feel depressed, angry, abandoned and confused. The temptation for people with faith is to think it inures them from all these normally human responses to death.
However, because you have faith, it means you are not alone in your struggle. You have somewhere to turn even though you might feel you were let down by that Someone. But God can handle your disappointment, your anger and your upset. No matter how you react, just remember that because you have faith, you have something priceless that people without faith don’t have … a belief in a Higher Power who is watching over you and directing you in uncertain places, who is waiting for you to call on him, who has all the answers to questions you haven’t even asked him yet, who will someday explain everything.
Whether your faith is weak or strong, embrace it and cling to it as you start on your healing journey because when you least expect it, it will be a comfort during the storms of grieving. It will eventually become a source of hope.
