When Rocky Balboa’s wife, Adrian, died at 51 of ovarian cancer between the fifth and sixth films in the Rocky series, Sylvester Stallone had a granite gravestone placed in Laurel Hill Cemetery in Philadelphia, which he would visit several times a week and talk with her in the later films “Rocky Balboa” and “Creed.”
The movies had scenes where the fictional world heavyweight boxing champion sat by her grave on a wooden chair and told her how lonely his life had become since her passing. This cinematic expression of grief by one of the film industry’s most enduring and beloved characters touched countless hearts.
Sylvester Stallone gave the gravestone to Laurel Hill Cemetery and since 2006, thousands of film fans have visited it each year. It says simply “Adrian Balboa, March 10, 1950 – January 11, 2002.” People come from all over the world to pay their respects to the character who was Rocky’s wife, played by actress Talia Shire, who was nominated for an Academy Award for her performance.
During an interview, the executive director of the cemetery said, “Even though more than 75,000 people are buried at Laurel Hill, visitors ask one question: ‘Where is Adrian Balboa buried?’” He said her grave lets her memory live on as though she were a “real person.”
Grief is such a universal expression of loss that we feel compassion even for fictional characters in literature and film.
