Hands Embracing Infant FeetDiane Ward began writing when she was young; however, she says, “It wasn’t until my first son was stillborn that I realized what a gift writing could be for my own soul.”

In her blog at Diane-Ward.com, she talks about her life and poetry. “I started writing when I was small — creating my own handmade cards with poems tucked inside to give as gifts,” she says. “My poem, ‘Silent Joy,’ was written in minutes as I allowed my emotions to flow from my heart onto paper. Writing was therapeutic then and has been ever since. I’ve started this blog to have a place to share hope with others. Life is full of the unexpected, and sometimes it can really rock our world. In both joy and sorrow, I’m determined to search and see where God is working. I believe God uses broken pieces to make one’s life a masterpiece. Through my own brokenness, I’ve discovered God’s faithfulness, which inspires me to live with gratefulness each day and to encourage others.”

Silent Joy

By Diane Ward

It was early on Wednesday when we awoke that morn,
We were going to deliver our baby, our son, our firstborn.
We were told he wouldn’t enter this world with a loud melodious cry.
In fact, we learned our son had passed away and they didn’t know why.

At eight, my labor had begun and continued to get stronger.
Minutes turned into hours and I asked myself, “How much longer?”
Eight hours and a half had already passed;
And then the long-awaited moment had arrived at last.

My body started to shake and my heart began to race,
The time had now come when I would view my son’s precious face.
I asked the Lord to give me strength so that I wouldn’t be afraid,
And he blessed my heart with peace as in my arms our firstborn son was laid.

My husband and I caressed our dear, peaceful son,
And knew from the start that the Lord had chosen him as a very special one.
Of course he was beautiful, as beautiful as can be,
And, just as we thought, he looked half like his dad and half like me.

His eyes were closed in such a heavenly slumber,
And as my eyes filled up with tears, I couldn’t help but wonder…
If this precious one, in his own silent way, was able to bring such joy to my heart;
How much more joy could there be if life continued from the start?

My husband and I stayed with Aaron until the time was now seven,
And then we laid him down, knowing in our hearts he was with Jesus in Heaven.
Heaven — What a wonderful place it will be,
To have Jesus, my husband and baby with me.
