“I pray for folks that need a hand”

By James P. Bohan

I have an alphabetical prayer list. I pray for folks that need a hand. In gratitude to them when they have helped me. And to God when he grants a wish.

Praying HandsA friend lovingly caring for her dying husband. An acquaintance in trouble of which she is unaware. A chap facing surgery. A friend who has lost a son. My wonder of a wife. My dear daughter. A religious sister who, in her work, defines splendor in education. Friends, relatives, and neighbors dealing with the labors of life. Political candidates, elected officeholders, those with whom I agree, and the others in more need.

A beautifully adopted former orphan and his family facing loss of a much loved four-year-old foster child. A student facing a challenging examination. Another chap who’s doing a jail term for DUI. Another friend’s wife mistreated in the workplace. Friends who have so generously helped as I age. So many for whom to offer prayers. Including for those with none others to do so. Last time I counted my list numbered 40. Remembering them all each morning exercises brain cells and neural networks in a more satisfying way than crosswords.

Prayers are answered: My friend’s husband has died; she’s found comfort in her church community. The wheels of justice turn slowly, but the court has approved adoption of the foster child by her loving foster family. And the mistreated worker has successfully resolved a painful, stressful situation.
