The Lord had me by the hand

By George Sheehy

I am one of the old folks at the 7 a.m. daily mass at St. Joseph Church. I believe that I am the longest communicant, which is going on 32 years if I make it. I started December 6, 1994. I’m probably almost the oldest as well. I was baptized there December 7, 1941, which was the bombing of Pearl Harbor. They can’t get rid of me.

Reaching the Hand of JesusI have gone to Mass all my life. I never drifted away even in the army. I was told that I was born with a veil, and maybe that is my saving grace.

And I never let go of the hand of the Lord. I ask a great deal from him. I know with the utmost certainty that I have been blessed all my life. So many times I’ve been spared from harm and sin … not that I am perfect or without faults because I am definitely not. I see it more as devotion and thankfulness for what I have been given.

When I look back at my life, I realize that all that happened was not by chance but because the Lord had me by the hand. No one can tell me differently. That about sums it up. Always keep the faith.
