“Truly great friends are hard to find, difficult to leave, and impossible to forget.”
— Author Unknown

When we lose someone we love, there is often a community of support that develops among people who were close to our loved one. And they, instead of falling away, oftentimes draw closer to us to comfort us and sustain us.

College BuddiesWhen Sue’s son Ben died, he was only 22. He was popular and had so many friends who hung out together in college. Over the years, they stayed in touch with her, and she watched them enter into adulthood. They became sort of a band of brothers.

“His friends were older and getting engaged and married, and I got to see these young men, and they were so reverent of their friend to bring us along with them,” she recalled.

“Even their parents were so grateful to have us there, and the guys would introduce us and say, ‘Ben’s parents are here. Or Ben’s brother is here,” she said.

The group would even show up for Ben’s younger brother Jack’s birthday.

“They became his big brothers, since he had lost his big brother,” she recalls.” That community of healing was good for them.”
