The following reflection is excerpted from “Experiencing the Father’s Embrace in Loss & Grief: Finding Unbroken Courage in Times of Crisis” by Trisha Frost

Woman on DockThere are all sorts of heartaches and heartbreaks in life. They say that misery loves company, and I can see how that is true. I have had loss and misery in my life, and the only company I wanted in it was to hear somebody else’s story of overcoming loss—not just another story about death and the eight-stage plan to overcome grief. I have heard about the different stages of grief and they are all real-life emotions. I have gone through all the stages, but early on I had no clue what stage of grief I was in. Some say denial because I did not grieve the way most people do; some say that I was in the bargaining stage: “God, if You bless me and use me like Jack [her late husband], I will dedicate the rest of my life to You.” Some have said I was angry and depressed, but I think I grieved Jack in many ways before he died because of the 13 months I watched him suffer every day. But for me, the reality of the loss was not just one event that happened, but loss came with many ripples. I was more prepared for the loss of Jack than I was for the loss of all those ripples that came along with the loss of Jack.
