“Our incredible lack of trust causes us to accept God’s Wisdom on issues of this life, but not our eternal life.”
— Mother Angelica

Mother Angelica once said that modern families are constantly on the move, from one city to the next, living a nomadic lifestyle that goes from job to job and place to place.
“With every move, there is an attendant fear: What will Los Angeles be like? How can I survive without my friend Beth? Will I be happy there? Is this the right thing? Unlike death, a move to another city is our decision. We are given a choice and we decide that the next place will probably be a better one,” she said.

MapNevertheless, we’re often overwhelmed by fear of the unknown. What will the new life bring in a different place.

“We are gripped by normal, human apprehension about the unknown, but we don’t think for a minute that our life will end just because we’re going to a different place,” she said. “We will still be the same person, with all of our weaknesses and strengths, our talents and our frailties. We will not be changing who we are but where we are. It’s our decision and we will make the best of it.

But death is something entirely different. It is not our own choice, she said:

“Even if we accept the fact that death is part of our spiritual migration, we’d like to have a say about our departure date. Something makes the unknown that we choose far less frightening than the unknown that someone else chooses for us, even if that Someone is God. Our incredible lack of trust causes us to accept his Wisdom on issues of this life, but not our eternal life. We trust him for our daily bread, but not for the Kingdom of Heaven.”
