—C.S. Lewis, “A Grief Observed”
When you grieve, you start to look at life in its entirety. Sometimes you think there’s no hope for the future because you’re so consumed with loss, and the present is filled with pain. Sometimes you lose the will to live because you confront the biggest question of all: What is there to live for? You’re sapped of your energy and usually find yourself going through the motions only because you have to, not necessarily because you think there is an ultimate purpose. As C.S. Lewis observed, “Up till this, I always had too little time. Now, there is nothing but time. Almost pure time, empty successiveness.” That means going from one activity to the next, a succession of seemingly meaningless errands and chores and routines.
In addition to enduring your loss, you will find yourself enduring a loss of purpose, which is another challenge you’ll face.
However, many people who take part in the New Day bereavement program find themselves again. They find their purpose again being around others confronting the same challenge in life … a challenge that all of us will confront. Listening to what others are going through and looking inside yourself and sharing, if you choose, will renew you. Your purpose, you may discover, is different than it had been before, but it will sustain you. Knowing you are not alone should give you hope that there’s still reason to wake up and look at the new day with expectation.
