Many people familiar with near-death experiences believe that the medieval artist Hieronymus Bosch depicted a scene similar to what they witnessed in his painting, “Ascent of the Blessed,” which shows souls as they approach the entrance of Paradise.
The painting, which is on display in Venice in the Gallerie dell’Accademia, was done sometime between 1505 and 1515 and shows angels assisting human souls toward a large tunnel that leads to eternal light and their destination, Heaven. One critic described it as a “funnel of goodness and light that captures the visionary and ecstatic union with God.”
The painting is one of a polyptych of four panels titled Visions of the Hereafter. The others in the series are “Terrestrial Paradise, “Fall of the Damned” and “Hell.”
