More than 100 artists have covered the song, “You Raise Me Up,” written by novelist and songwriter Brendan Graham and composed by Rolf Løvland, The song was performed for the first time at Løvland’s mother’s funeral.
Josh Groban performed the song at Super Bowl XXXVIII as part of a special NASA ceremony to commemorate the 7 crew members of the Space Shuttle “Columbia,” who were killed on February 1, 2003, after the shuttle disintegrated upon reentering the atmosphere. Groban also did a surprise performance of the song to celebrate Oprah Winfrey’s 50th birthday. From then, it became an international sensation.
The song speaks to many people who are grieving and suffering in their lives with its hopeful lyrics: “You raise me up, so I can stand on mountains, you raise me up to walk on stormy seas. I am strong when I am on your shoulders. You raise me up to more than I can be.”
