Image of Hildegard of Bingen

Hildegard of Bingen was a German Benedictine abbess, a mystic, a writer and a composer who lived in the 12th century. Pope Benedict XVI named her a Doctor of the Church, one of four women to hold that honor. During one of his general audiences, he said: “Let us always invoke the Holy Spirit, so that he may inspire in the Church holy and courageous women like Saint Hildegard of Bingen who, developing the gifts they have received from God, make their own special and valuable contribution to the spiritual development of our communities and of the Church in our time.” This simple prayer to the Holy Spirit by St. Hildegard tells us so much about the importance of turning to the Third Person of the Blessed Trinity in our grief and woundedness. Today, on her feast day, we ask, “St. Hildegard of Bingen, pray for us.”

Holy Spirit,
giving life to all life,
moving all creatures,
Root of all things,
washing them clean,
wiping out their mistakes,
healing their wounds,
You are our true life,
luminous, wonderful,
awakening the heart
from its ancient sleep.
