Little Angels Shrine at Resurrection Cemetery in Newtown has installed a marble statue of Our Lady of Guadalupe, who is widely revered as the patroness of the unborn.
On September 12 at 11 a.m., Father Eric Silva, pastor of St. Joseph Church in Danbury, will offer a blessing of the statue, following a committal ceremony for miscarried or stillborn babies. according to Carolyn Killian, Director of Bereavement.
To date, Catholic Cemeteries has buried 15 miscarried, stillborn or babies who died shortly after birth and memorialized 95 babies on the Shrine’s Wall of Remembrance, Killian said.
“The Little Angels Shrine has been a very rewarding journey from standing in the frozen field at Resurrection Cemetery in February of 2024 to installing the Stations of the Cross, the five Memorial Walls and now finally, the statue of Our Lady of Guadalupe in September,” said Kenn Devane of Fairfield County Catholic Cemeteries. “Thank you to the visionaries who convinced us to build the Shrine, the workers who made it a reality, and the parents who have given us the memories and remains of their children to take care of in our sacred ground.”
The Little Angels Shrine at 208 S. Main Street honors the memory of all deceased children, and it provides a reverent place of prayer and healing for parents and others who have experienced the death of a child. The shrine features an altar area with seats and benches for services, surrounded by 14 Carrara marble Stations of the Cross on granite platforms. Beyond that, there are five Memorial Walls where remains will be buried, and a plaque will be affixed to the wall. When remains are not available, a plaque honoring your child will be placed on a memorial wall at the shrine.
Depending on the need, a priest or deacon will offer a Committal Ceremony one Saturday a month to bury the remains of miscarried babies. Catholic Cemeteries will work individually with families who request the burial of a stillborn baby or a newly born infant. There is no charge for the service, burial, plaques/inscriptions, but they accept donations to help support this sacred and healing space.
