Reflecting on her mother’s loss years earlier, a doctor who wrote a letter to the editor of the Hearst newspapers and spoke about everything she would tell her mother if she were given the chance:
“Rather than reliving the past with my mom, I would tell her that now, nearly 20 years after her death, I finally understand her so much better. Things she did and said 40 or 50 years ago that I puzzled over, disagreed with and argued about, I now understand.
“Now that I am older and closer to her elder years, I see the meaning behind her words of protection from daily news traumas, why she wanted to have peace and not political protests. I finally understand her wish for quiet, gentle care and love, not exuberant travel and experiences.
“Now I wish I could thank her for her wisdom and thoughtfulness, most of which I did not understand or value. With a big hug, I would tell her… “Happy Mother’s Day, Mom. I love you…”
