Confide, Even in Tears
The second Beatitude says: “Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted” (Matthew 5:4). These words might seem contradictory because weeping is not typically considered a blessing, a sign of joy and happiness. Weeping and mourning are usually tied to death, illness, moral adversity, sin and mistakes. In other words, the basic, delicate and difficult issues of everyday life. We often live with wounds and are tested by ingratitude and misunderstanding.
Jesus proclaims as holy those people who weep for real situations, people who, despite it all, trust in the Lord and seek comfort under His wing. These people are not indifferent, nor do their hearts grow hard with the suffering they witness. They continue to hope patiently for God’s comfort. And they do not have to wait to feel this comfort; they experience it in their everyday life.
