“A great storm arose on the lake so that waves covered the boat, but Jesus was sleeping. His followers went to him and woke him, saying, “Lord, save us! We will drown!” Jesus answered, “Why are you afraid?”
— Matthew 8:23-27
The goal of our spiritual life should be greater consciousness of God’s activity in our lives, not day by day but minute by minute. This does not mean we will not confront suffering or feel pain, but it does mean he is sharing life’s travails with us and not as a detached observer, especially when our grief or losses conspire to make us despondent or dejected with no sign of hope for the future. But there’s always hope for the future, no matter how old we are, no matter what we have endured. You see, God has a plan for you and it’s infinitely better than your plan.
The closer we move toward God, through contemplation, Eucharistic adoration, prayer and silence, the more we will see him at work in our lives. It’s as if the scales fall off our eyes. And once we experience his guiding hand and union with him, despair is dissipated because we realize that no matter what trial we are forced to endure, we can always stay close to him and weather it. Always remember that God is constantly trying to move closer to you, and all that you have to do is open the door.
Do you remember the Gospel story of the disciples caught in the tempestuous storm on the Sea of Galilee while Jesus slept in the back of the boat? They were screaming in fear. How could Jesus be sleeping? Never forget that Jesus is always in control, and all we have to do is open our hearts to him and let him work.
