“Weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning,” David wrote in Psalm 30. They are words of hope, but when you are grieving, there is weeping for the night, but instead of joy, the morning often brings the sad realization that your life is no longer the same and the one you love is gone.

King DavidIf you are fortunate enough to sleep, you will find yourself waking and momentarily forgetting your situation, until it returns again and you have to face a new reality on a new day. However, many people suffer from insomnia and lie awake at night, longing for the past, dejected about the present and fearing the future.

The only escape is those momentary distractions during your working day. Dealing with grief is definitely a journey, and it can seem as if you’re walking under dark endless clouds, until one day, when you least expect it, you’ll find a break in the clouds that gives you hope to keep moving forward.

Psalm 30 is actually a prayer of thanksgiving, and David, who endured trials and suffering, is able to say:

“I praise You, LORD, for You raised me up
and did not let my enemies rejoice over me.
O LORD, my God,
I cried out to You for help and You healed me.
LORD, You brought my soul up from Sheol;
You let me live, from going down to the pit…
You changed my mourning into dancing;
You took off my sackcloth
and clothed me with gladness.
So that my glory may praise You
and not be silent.
O LORD, my God,
forever will I give You thanks.”
