We’re pleased to announce that St. Mary/Putnam Cemetery in Greenwich, CT has achieved Level II Arboretum accreditation from the ArbNet Arboretum Program and the Morton Arboretum. This prestigious designation recognizes our commitment to maintaining professional standards in arboreta and botanic gardens.

For those who haven’t had the opportunity to explore St. Mary/Putnam, allow us to paint a picture for you. Spread across 80 acres of picturesque rolling hills, woods, and wetlands, our cemetery is one of Greenwich’s most beloved natural sanctuaries.

Our Journey to Arboretum Accreditation

The journey towards our Level II arboretum status began in January 2022 when Dean Gestal, Executive Director of Catholic Cemeteries, spearheaded the initiative. Under the guidance of Cemetery Superintendent Jason Brander, we meticulously cataloged, mapped, and tagged each tree across our grounds. To meet the criteria for Level II accreditation, we introduced 11 new tree species, though our dedication has led us to plant many more over recent years.

Embracing Biodiversity and Community Engagement

memorials in the arboretumIn our commitment to environmental stewardship, we’ve prioritized the cultivation of indigenous plants and shrubs. From native northern high-bush blueberries to vibrant dogwoods, we’ve sought to enhance the biodiversity of our landscape. We’ve also introduced ferns and grasses and are excited to unveil a butterfly garden featuring native milkweed and blazing stars later this year.

Maintaining the health and beauty of our arboretum is paramount. Our dedicated staff has developed a comprehensive maintenance schedule, ensuring that our trees receive the care they need through regular trimming and pruning.

At St. Mary/Putnam Cemetery, we recognize the importance of community engagement. Our accreditation is a testament to our commitment to serving those who have loved ones resting here and in the wider Greenwich community. Our gates are open to all, welcoming joggers, walkers, nature enthusiasts, birdwatchers, and those seeking solace in our tranquil surroundings.

We take pride in our role within the community and invite you to share that pride by visiting us.

The cemetery grounds are open from dawn to dusk, and cemetery office hours are 9 am to 4 pm Monday to Friday, with additional hours on the 1st and 3rd Saturdays of the month from 9 am to noon.
